Thorough Information On Solid Film Lubricants

Solid Film Lubricants

Solid Film Lubricants

Industries generally have a tale with unique conditions in their plant. At least one application is present in every manufacturing unit. And it can be defined as an extreme and crucial condition based on a lubrication viewpoint. There are many examples of harsh states. This includes high pressures, high or low temperatures, high or low shaft speeds, atmospheric and process contamination, etc. Solid film lubricants are the best way to tackle harsh conditions.

Lubricants must provide adequate lubrication when they make contact with the surface area. The speed is helping oil film formation at that time, and the temperature range is within the set range. Oil type does not affect the limit for lubricants. Usually, a change in fluid state prevents the formation of lubrication films.

Solid film Lubricants: What is it

Unlike liquid oil lubricants, these exist in solid form without requiring liquid oil. It can reduce friction between two sliding materials.

These have two key components: graphite and molybdenum disulfide. These lubricants work well at high temperatures, whereas oils and liquids cannot.

Solid film lubrication coating arrives in several types. It depends on the application. Among them are:

● MoS or molybdenum disulfide

● PTFE or polytetrafluoroethylene (most of us know it as Teflon)

When selecting, it is vital to consider the following properties:

● The coefficient of friction

● Load–carrying ability

● Corrosion resistivity

● Electrical conductivity

● Working state

● Such as radiation, temperature, stress, humidity, oxygen range, etc.

● With a low coefficient of friction, moly has the highest load-carrying capacity. However, it begins to oxidize at 400°C. The material fits applications with high load powers but not for high-temperature methods.

● Acids, bases, and solvents do not affect the performance of PTFE as an antiwear additive. It cannot be used at high temperatures and loads in rival acid applications.

It is possible to achieve the same result with other greases. On the other hand, solid film lubricants are effective on surfaces where oils are difficult to apply and keep. There are some surfaces that traditional oils cannot stick to. And they can also become infected quickly. As for these lubricants, that is not true.

Moreover, they reduce friction between surfaces fast in extreme states and environments. Some of these include:

● Extremes of temperature

● Low and high pressures

● Useless in areas with no access to oils or liquids

In addition to its shield from extreme situations, solid film in lubricant state offers significant benefits for both small and large industrial parts.

These provide many benefits over other lubricants. They have vast areas to use and offer many benefits. Their benefits save the parts in challenging cases.

In addition, they provide great protection from wear and tear and friction. This can protect your machines or any moving parts.
