Today 2D materials are used in various research works. Now the question arises, what 2D materials really are. A 2D material is generally made up of their total surface. It has a thickness of a one-atom. This is a newly evolved material and is distinct in its form. This material has a higher flexibility as compared to different materials and is porous too. A 2-Dimensional material is remarkably strong and rigid in form.

2D materials for research: The various kinds

Graphene – It is a sheet of carbon atoms and is arranged either hexagonally or in the shape of a honeycomb. It has a thickness of a single atom. It is known to be the thinnest material and possess the strength which is more than steel. Graphene is transparent in nature and pliable as well. It is a conductor of electricity and heat. This is mainly made to be applied in industrial scale along with a transparent electrode which is a conductor.

Silicone – It has the thickness of one atom and contains the electrical property of graphene. This can be used in any circuits made of silicon forming the base and is used for developing miniature electronic devices.

Silica Glass – This is the thinnest form of glass and is made via electron microscopy. This is discovered by David Muller and his colleagues in Kavli Institute which is situated in New York.

Molybdenum Disulfide – It is used as a lubricant and is a part of the 2D materials for research. It is silvery black in color.

Boron - This material is formed naturally and has a metallic texture. It is a superconductor of low temperature and does not lose its resistivity until the temperatures go down to 10 or 20 Kelvin which is minus 430 degrees Fahrenheit.
